A Word From Alumni: Mitch Kimball

In this blog post we hear from one of our Marketing Lab alumni, Mitch Kimball. Look for more blogs from our amazing alumni to read how their Marketing Lab experience helped them in their current job.

About Mitch

I am currently on the Advanced Analytics team at Qualtrics. I do data science stuff with clients from lots of different verticals. The work I do includes discrete choice analysis, pricing studies, etc.

I graduated last April from the Marketing program. During my time at school, I had the opportunity to intern at United Healthcare and Google. The Marketing Lab gave me the opportunity to work on projects for Adobe and General Mills.

Mitchell’s typical day

Normally, I’m talking with a client about a potential project, or building out a study for a client, or doing an analysis in R after results are fielded, or building a deck to showcase the results. Pretty much identical to what is done in the Marketing Lab. The job also includes a lot of R&D to develop new functions and packages that will make things easier as well as developing new methodologies to sell to clients. I normally swap between a sales hat and a data hat. I personally love that balance.

How did the Marketing Lab prepare him for his current role?

What I do now is pretty much identical to what I did in the Marketing Lab. Getting that practice early on has provided me a head start in the company and has helped me deliver valuable content to our clients.

I’m stoked about this because it’s exactly what I wanted to do after I graduated.

Any tips for someone who is considering a role with the Marketing Lab?

Develop your analytical skills. Superstars like Zach and Sam (current employees in the Marketing Lab) have these skills which serve the client with awesome data and insights. Even if you don’t want an analyst job out of school, analytical skills are important to have and will always be worth your time learning.
